The Importance Of Ergonomic Office Chairs

Ricardo Castillo

If you're choosing a new chair, you shouldn't make the decision lightly. Choosing a new chair is just as important as picking out a pair of comfortable, supportive shoes. If you do it right, you'll be taking care of your body, but if you do it wrong, you'll be hurting yourself potentially for a very long time. Here's what you need to know about the importance of choosing an ergonomic desk chair.

Comfort Doesn't Mean Ergonomic

The first thing you should know is that while an ergonomic chair should always be comfortable, that doesn't mean that all comfortable chairs are ergonomic. Unfortunately, some plushy and comfy chairs are actually bad for your spine and posture. Always look for a label that notes that the chair is ergonomic or has been approved by doctors or chiropractors to ensure you're getting the best kind of seat.

Short-Term

If you don't get an ergonomic desk chair, you'll have some problems due to it in the short-term.

To start with, your chair may seem comfortable at first, but you may notice some pressure points developing after sitting in it for a long period of time. Pressure points can develop along the spine or even on the buttocks that can make you shift and squirm around trying to find a more comfortable position. Unfortunately, wiggling around like this will put your spine at odd angles which will make it even worse for you.

In addition, choosing a non-ergonomic chair may reinforce bad posture habits like leaning forward to type or jutting your head out when using a monitor. This can lead to long-term bad posture.

Long-Term

In the long-term, a non-ergonomic chair tends to get even worse. If the chair isn't ergonomic, there's a strong likelihood that it isn't made out of materials that will hold a certain shape, either. So even if your chair starts out feeling comfortable to you, it may not stay that way over time.

As time goes on with you using this chair and it encouraging poor posture, you may start to develop permanent back and spine pain. In the early stages, this can often be corrected by improving your posture and doing exercises to strengthen your back and surrounding supportive muscles, but if you don't take steps to improve it, you may find yourself at a doctor's office with extreme back pain and even pinched nerves.

Taking care of your back should be one of your leading priorities in life. It takes care of you everyday, so return the favor and make the leap to choose an ergonomic office chair.
