How To Make Old Furniture Look New Again

Ricardo Castillo

Furnishing your house or apartment can be expensive. Even though you may be able to find affordable new furniture out there, it tends to look pretty generic and like it's out of a 1990's catalog. If you want the look of designer furniture but you don't want to spend the money on it, there are a few different things you can do to take old furniture and make it look like new again.

Sand Down Wood

When you are picking out vintage furniture, make sure that you go with furniture that is made of solid wood. Solid wood is great for a variety of reasons including that it's durable and you can sand it down. When you are working with a material like composite wood or vinyl, you can't sand it down and re-purpose it. However, with solid wood, you can sand it down to get rid of a stain finish or even paint.

Paint It or Stain it

Once you sand everything down and get rid of the existing finish that's on it, then you can start creating your own piece of furniture. This is where your creativity really comes into play. Start choosing a color pallet that you want to use throughout your entire home and then try incorporating it into either the stain or paint that you use on your furniture. If you do decide to go with a paint rather than a stain, make sure that you go with something like Latex because it's easy to use and it doesn't contain a lot of fumes.

Reupholster It

If you are dealing with couches or chairs then you should have the reupholstered. After you have torn off existing furniture upholstery, sanded own the wood, and painted/stained the wood, it's time to go shopping for some fabrics. When choosing fabrics, try to have fun with it. For instance, if you have a couch and a set of side chairs, you can upholster your couch in a solid color and then upholster your chairs in a pattern color. Just make sure that you keep your lifestyle in mind when choosing fabric. For instance, if you have a lot of little kids, then you will want to choose a durable fabric that you can wipe down really easily.

Taking old furniture and making it look like new can be a lot of work, but it can definitely save you some money.
