Avoid These Common Mattress Shopping And Care Mistakes

Ricardo Castillo

According to HuffPost, the average person spends around 26 years of their life sleeping. With all this time in bed, you want to ensure that you buy the right mattress for your needs and that you care for this mattress properly. Unfortunately, there are several mistakes that mattress owners make that will impact the mattress's longevity. Here are a few everyday mattress shopping and care mistakes you need to avoid.

Buying the First Mattress You See

Shopping at a mattress store can be overwhelming, and unfortunately, you might become so confused that you purchase the first mattress you try. You might also buy an inexpensive mattress that is not providing enough support. Unfortunately, not shopping around and understanding the right mattress for your sleep style can lead to unnecessary aches and pains and a stormy night's sleep.

Instead, talk to the sales staff at the mattress store to determine the right mattress for you. For example, if you are a side sleeper, a pillowtop mattress is often the best option because it will provide you with the proper support. Couples often benefit from a memory foam mattress; a firmer mattress is often the best choice if you prefer to sleep on your back.

Eating in Bed

From a Mother's Day breakfast in bed to a late-night pizza dinner, many people enjoy a full meal or a quick snack while lounging in bed. While this might seem innocent, in reality, eating in bed can actually damage your mattress. In addition to staining, food crumbs can attract insects and other pests that can destroy your mattress.

Instead, if you want a snack or a full meal, eat on your couch or at the kitchen table instead.

Skipping the Mattress Protector

A fitted sheet does provide a layer of protection for your mattress. However, if you do not have a mattress protector, you would be surprised at how quickly your mattress can become destroyed. This is because all of the sweat, pet dander, dust, and other debris that collects on your mattress can weigh it down, and eventually, your sleep patterns can be disrupted because the mattress is so damaged.

Several different mattress protectors are available, including a protector that encompasses the entire mattress, a waterproof protector, and even a cooling mattress protector that can help improve your sleep hygiene.

From foregoing a mattress protector to enjoying too many snacks in bed, there are several mistakes that mattress shoppers and owners make.
